CHORE COAT

Three pockets. Triple stitch. One coat all week.

12OZ COTTON DUCK · DUCK BROWN · TRIPLE-NEEDLE MAIN SEAMS · 5 BLACK-STEEL SHANK BUTTONS · 3 PATCH POCKETS

Boxy, hip length, unlined. Garment-washed so it's already broken in at the seams. Pocket corners are bar-tacked, because that's where a pocket tears off a coat. It's stiff the first month. Then it's yours.

WEARS IN ATCollar edge, cuffs, pocket mouths. That's the coat working, not failing.

HEAVY FLANNEL

Eight ounces, brushed both sides. Warm on a loading dock at six in January.

8OZ BRUSHED COTTON · RUST/LINE BLACK BUFFALO CHECK · 7 HORN BUTTONS · BIAS-CUT FLAP CHEST POCKETS

Two colors, two-inch blocks, no overstripe. Buffalo check, not tartan. The chest pockets are cut on the bias so the check runs diagonal, with a pointed flap and one horn button each. Wear it alone in October. Under the coat in January.

WEARS IN ATThe nap softens and the rust goes a shade warmer. The check stays the check.

WHERE THE NAME COMES FROM

THE BELT STOPPED. THE PEOPLE DIDN'T.

Ironbelt was line slang for the main conveyor at a body stamping plant on the east side. It ran two shifts and Saturday overtime for forty-one years. In the spring of 2009 it stopped.

Our founder's father ran a press on that line for thirty-one years. He blew out the right knee of his work pants every season, kneeling to clear the die. He'd cut a square off an old tarp and sew it over the hole at the kitchen table.

That patch is our double knee.

We didn't invent the name. We just put it back to work.

Written fiction for a sample brand. The plant, the line and the founder's family are invented. No real company or person is described. Detroit's streets and neighborhoods are real.

HOW WE DO IT.

  1. 1

We don't do drops. We restock. When a size runs out, we make more of the same thing, the same way.

  2. 2

Nothing on the buttons. No logos, no letters. The chest patch on the coat stays blank.

  3. 3

Wash it cold. Or don't. It doesn't care.Hang it dry if you want it to last. Turn the flannel inside out.

  4. 4

Cut for people on their knees by 6 a.m.Millwrights, pipefitters, tile setters, forklift drivers. Everybody else is welcome. It'll just be bored.

WE DON'T DO DROPS. WE RESTOCK.
