Chair one, the owner

“My name's on the glass now, so every cut that leaves my chair has to be worth the walk over.” Ray Ledesma

Eight years I cut under somebody else's name across town. Now it's my name on the window, a short walk up 12th Street from Coronado Park, and I answer for every cut that leaves this shop.

I brought two men with me. Augie has forty-one years behind a chair and does the shaves. Nico learned at the station next to mine and followed me over. He does the fades, and you won't find where they turn.

Three chairs, a bench by the window, coffee on. Come in when you need a cut. Book when you need to know.

The shop

Brick, beadboard, three chairs.

An old clinker-brick storefront in the bungalow blocks between 7th and 14th Streets. The kind of shop that's always just been there. Now it's ours.

The back bar: corded clippers and a tray of guards on an oak counter, a jar of combs in blue disinfectant, a leather strop on its hook, bottles on a shelf under two milk-glass lamps.
The back bar. Clippers, a tray of guards, the strop on its hook.
An old wooden church-pew bench against brick with a red cushion and a straw hat, a lamp and a coffee mug on a side table, an old street photo and a cream radio on the shelf above.
The bench by the window. Coffee's on, water's in the cooler.
A straight razor, a rolled hot towel and a shaving brush in a lathered mug on an oak shelf, steam rising, the strop hanging beside it.
Hot towel, warm lather, the razor. Augie's chair.

Three chairs

Who's cutting.

  1. Chair one · owner

    Ray Ledesma

Ask him for your regular cut, a taper that grows out even, a fade that still looks right in week three.

“Same cut as last time, but better.”
  2. Chair two · 41 years behind a chair

    Augie Benavidez

Ask him for the hot-towel shave, a scissor cut, the long slow flat-top.

“Lather's a minute longer than you think it should be. That minute's the shave.”
  3. Chair three · Saturday mornings

    Nico Ruelas

Ask him for a skin fade, a hard part, a design, the kids.

“If you can find where the fade turns, come back and I'll fix it free.”
