Private parties in Dormont · South Hills

The upstairs room at The Trolley Stop in afternoon light: a long carved wood back bar with a mirror and a brass foot rail on the left, long farmhouse tables with bentwood chairs, and tall windows over West Liberty Avenue on the right.

The upstairs room is yours for the night.

Above our bar and grill on West Liberty Avenue there's a room with its own wood bar, long tables and a row of windows on the street. Bring your people. We'll bring the food.

The room

One flight up from the Friday crowd.

Climb the stairs past the downstairs bar and the noise falls away. Up here it's only your party. An old wood bar runs along one wall with a bartender pouring for your guests and nobody else's. Long communal tables keep everyone together, so Grandma and the cousins from Bethel Park end up at the same table instead of scattered across the room. Tall windows look down on West Liberty Avenue, and when the streetlights come on below, the whole room goes warm.

Two pints on a bar towel at the near end of the long wood bar upstairs, with the tables and the street windows beyond.
  1. Set the tables in long rows for a sit-down dinner.
  2. Pull one aside for gifts, photo boards or the cookie table.
  3. Open up the middle when it's time for toasts.

The food

The same food we cook downstairs.

We didn't write a banquet menu. Your party eats what the regulars order.

A Friday fish sandwich: a long fried cod fillet hanging past both ends of a soft roll, with coleslaw, tartar sauce, a lemon wedge and a pint.

The Friday fish sandwich

A big piece of breaded cod, fried crisp and hanging well past both ends of a soft roll. Tartar sauce and lemon on the side. It's the reason the line goes out the door every Friday in Lent.

Pan-browned potato and cheese pierogies under a pile of dark caramelized onions, with a cup of sour cream.

Pierogies

Potato and cheese, pinched by hand in our kitchen, browned in butter with soft onions. Sour cream on the side. They disappear first at every party, so we always make extra.

A plate of sauced buffalo wings with celery and carrot sticks, a cup of blue cheese and a pint.

Wings

Crisp and sauced, by the tray. Hot, mild or dry rub, with celery and blue cheese because this is Pittsburgh and somebody will ask.

How it's served

For parties we set it out family style down the long tables or as a buffet along the bar, whichever suits the day. Tell us who's coming and we'll build the spread around them. The pierogies keep the vegetarians happy, and the kids never need a separate menu once the wings come out.

What people book it for

Showers, repasts and retirement parties.

The upstairs room set for a party at dusk: two long rows of tables with linen runners, white plates, candles and white and yellow flowers, the wood bar along the left wall and the street lit outside the windows.

Baby showers and bridal showers

Afternoon light through the street windows, one long table for the gifts and another for the cookie table your aunts are already planning. We keep the coffee and the punch coming and leave room for the games. You handle the guest list. We handle the tables, the food and the cleanup.

Repasts and funeral luncheons

After the service, a family needs somewhere quiet to sit down together, and nobody has the energy to plan it. The upstairs room is private, the tables are long enough to keep everyone close, and we can usually have it ready on a few days' notice. Call us and we'll take care of the details. Bring photographs if you like; we'll set a table aside for them.

Retirement parties

Thirty years at the same desk, the same plant, the same bus route deserves more than sheet cake in the break room. Bring the whole crew and the family upstairs, stand the photo boards along the windows, and let somebody tell the stories. There's a bar for the toasts and a long table for everyone who wants to hear them.

Also good for milestone birthdays, anniversaries, communion and graduation parties, the office holiday dinner.

The neighborhood

A trolley stop, more or less.

The South Hills grew up along the streetcar lines. Dormont, Mt. Lebanon and Castle Shannon filled in a stop at a time, built by people riding home from town, and the T still runs that way today. We're on West Liberty Avenue in Dormont, a few blocks from Potomac station: the place you walk to after the train.

Downstairs it's a working bar. Fish fry every Friday. Trivia every Wednesday night. The game on, the regulars on their stools, somebody's kid doing homework in the back booth. Upstairs is where the neighborhood comes for the bigger days.

Getting here

  • By carStreet parking along West Liberty Avenue and the side streets.

Questions people ask

How many people fit?

The room seats 60 at long tables. Smaller parties get the whole room too.

Can we bring our own cake or cookie table?

Yes. Bring the cake, the cookies, the centerpieces. We'll clear a table for them.

How much notice do you need?

A couple of weeks is comfortable for a shower or a retirement party. For a repast, call us; a few days is usually enough.

Is the room private?

Yes. Upstairs is closed to everyone but your party, with its own bar and its own bartender.

What does it cost?

It depends on the night, the headcount and the food. Tell us those three things and we'll call back with a real price, not a range.

Book the room

Tell us the day. We'll handle the room.

Send us the date, about how many people, and what you're getting together for. We'll call you back within one business day with what the room looks like that night, a menu that fits your crowd and a price. Weeknights are wide open.
