Film, Music & Animation · A song for his father

A country song about a truck that is really about the man

A country song about a truck that's really about the man who drove it for twenty-two years.

The brief, verbatim

I want a country song written and recorded. Here's who it's for.

My dad drove the same F-150 for twenty-two years. He passed last fall, and the truck's still in the driveway because none of us can bring ourselves to sell it. Every dent in that thing has a story: the tailgate from the deer in '09, the bench seat where I learned to drive, the radio knob that only he knew how to hold just right.

I want the song to be about the truck, because the truck is really about him. Not sad the whole way through: he was funny, and the song should smile at least once. Three minutes or so, a voice with some gravel in it.

Show me the verses before you sing them. If the words are right, my whole family is going to hear this at Thanksgiving, so they have to be right.

What the room did

The recorded song, written from the real details: the '09 tailgate dent, the bench seat where he taught his kid to drive, the radio knob only he knew how to hold. Beside it, the printed keepsake of the approved lyrics and the album cover: the truck in the driveway at first light, the title set in the same warm hand. The recording ships with the case.
