Business & Strategy · Brand turnaround pitch

A dying chocolate brand cracked open: you cannot fake ninety-five years

A dying heritage chocolate brand, cracked open the way a top agency wins the account: “You can't fake ninety-five years.”

The brief, verbatim

Project: a full brand turnaround campaign for a dying heritage brand. Strategy, big idea, and the entire campaign, pitched the way a top creative agency would pitch it to win the account. This is the business and advertising entry in the use case gallery.

Laura, this one shows Kaldune is a real agency that solves real business problems, not a logo shop. I want the team to take a struggling brand and crack it wide open: diagnose why it is losing, find the insight, build the big idea, and produce the whole campaign as artifacts a client could not say no to.

The client and the problem, your team owns the creative answer: Marlowe and Sons, a 95-year-old American chocolate house, family-owned, beloved and dusty. Sales flat for a decade. The loyal customer is aging out, Gen Z and young millennials see it as their grandmother's chocolate, shelf space is shrinking, and a slick young DTC competitor is eating the category. The brief: reverse the decline, win a new generation without losing the base, and earn back a premium. This is a growth problem, not a paint job.

Make the thinking real. This is the rigor bar, the agency equivalent of getting the weight and balance right on the jet. Pretty ads on a weak strategy do not ship:

  • A real diagnosis of the business problem, the audience, and the cultural tension underneath it.
  • A sharp insight, and a clear positioning that follows from it.
  • A creative platform, the big idea, that a whole campaign hangs off of.
  • Measurable objectives and a business case: what success looks like, the KPIs, the projected impact on growth.

I am deliberately leaving the big idea to the team. Watching them crack a real brief is the point of this one. Lock the craft, not the concept: awards-level art direction, premium production value, one coherent campaign world across every asset.

Deliverables, heavy on visuals and artifacts, the whole nine yards:

  • The agency pitch deck, the centerpiece: situation, problem, insight, strategy, the big idea, the work, the plan, the business case. Designed like a deck that wins the room.
  • Brand platform: positioning, the campaign line or manifesto, tone of voice.
  • Refreshed visual direction where the idea calls for it: logo treatment, palette, type, and packaging redesign mockups.
  • The campaign itself, fully art-directed:
  • A hero key visual.
  • Out-of-home and billboard mockups placed in real environments.
  • A social campaign, a real set of posts across formats.
  • A print ad.
  • A film spot as a scripted storyboard, frame by frame.
  • An experiential or activation idea brought to life as a visual.
  • A media plan with flighting and budget logic.

Standard: a real CMO should watch this pitch and want to sign the contract in the room. Strategy that holds up, an idea that surprises, and craft that looks like the best agency in the world made it. Ship it like the pitch is tomorrow morning.

What the room did

The 34-page pitch deck, from the diagnosis to the slide that ends the meeting, on the “Show Your Receipts” platform. Underneath it: a live five-sheet business case with every figure a real formula, the brand platform and identity laws, and the campaign fully art-directed, the hero ledger, three billboards in real streets, the social set, the film storyboard, and The Archive activation.
