The Companion

Glasses that become your best buddy: a heads-up companion in a frame you'd wear for its own sake, filmed through her eyes and engineered down to the bill.

The brief, verbatim

Laura, I want to build something really, really cool. I want to be an inventor. I want to invent something.

Special pair of glasses, kind of like the smart glasses the big tech and eyewear brands have put out together. They took beautiful fashion glasses and built a chip and built AI into it, and you can take pictures and videos, and you can talk to it, but it's still not quite there. It's very buggy. It doesn't listen very well. It's really more of a question-and-answer thing. You can't really have a conversation. It's not as real-time, and it's not in sync.

I want glasses that really become your best buddy and do beyond just telling you what the weather is like. They can actually say, "Hey, show me directions." It's like the heads-up display on a car, right? It'll show you directions, run up a maps app, put it in front of you in your eyes, and talk to you about anything. Not quite like reality. It's not a VR set by any means. It's just much more enhanced, friendly glass.

A lot of the gadgets are just very much like, "Hey, can you take a picture? No problem. Can you take a video? No problem." Beyond that, it gets complicated. Anyway, something better looks better, functionally better, something like that. What do you think?

What the studio made

An engineering breakdown that makes the invention inspectable — the premise, the nine parts of the frame, the optical path painted into the lens, compute and sensing, battery and sound, materials and heat, the full specification and the honest trade-offs — beside a point-of-view film of a day with the glasses: navigation drawn on the street, a café card, a sign translated in the lens. A companion document covers the brain, the signal and the bill: architecture choices, connectivity and unit cost at scale.
