Products & Industrial Design · An espresso machine that looks like art
The Instrument
An espresso machine that doesn't look like one: a slender column on a stone base, three brass gestures, and the honest case for building it.
The brief, verbatim
Laura, I don't know what I want. Can you help me?
I want to build an incredible espresso coffee machine with a milk frother, but I don't want it to look like a coffee machine. I want it to look like a piece of art, like a piano, like something cool that, when it's not making coffee, just looks like a beautiful piece in my kitchen.
What the studio made
A nineteen-page concept monograph in two halves. First the object: a satin aluminium column on honed black marble, a turntable-style tonearm for steam, three brass gestures and nothing else to learn, shown from every angle and at home on a real counter. Then the case for building it: two stacked boilers and a rotary pump inside the column, the chimney that cools it without a grille, a bill of major systems, tooling and amortization, and the certification path for a heated, pressurised, food-contact appliance.
